The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ebenezer Oduro Owusu, has handed over two anatomage tables valued at a cost of GHS 1.3m to the Department of Anatomy, University of Ghana Medical School (UGMS) of the College of Health Sciences. Prior to the presentation, the Vice-Chancellor remarked that the idea of procuring the anatomage tables was conceived two years ago when he had the opportunity to tour some facilities of a foreign university he visited. He added that the plan was to acquire ten (10) of the anatomage tables and assured the Department that efforts will be made to procure the remaining.
The anatomage table is a technologically advanced anatomy visualization system for anatomy education. It combines stereoscopic software images of the whole body to build 3-D reconstruction of the different human body parts, allowing for virtual dissection and reconstruction.
Speaking at the ceremony, Provost of the College of Health Sciences, Rev. Professor Patrick F. Ayeh-Kumi, indicated that the anatomage tables will significantly enhance teaching and learning of medical students and allied health professionals of the College of Health Sciences. While admitting that the equipment was long overdue, he was nevertheless grateful to the Vice-Chancellor and Senior Management for their thoughtfulness.
The Head of Department, Dr. John Ahenkorah, was also full of gratitude to the University’s Senior Management for the equipment. According to Dr. Ahenkorah, even though some Medical Schools in the country have anatomage tables, what was presented to the Department was state of the art and advanced. He assured the Vice-Chancellor and the University that the Department would take very good care of the equipment and also use it for its intended purpose.
Rev. Dr. Benjamin Arko-Boham prayed to dedicate the equipment before the Vice-Chancellor handed them over to the Head of Department.
Present at the ceremony were Professor C. N. B. Tagoe, former Vice-Chancellor; Professor Margaret Lartey, Dean, University of Ghana Medical School; Professor Andrew Anthony Adjei, Coordinator of the Vice-Chancellor’s Strategic Teams; Mr. Michael Opare Atuah, College Secretary as well as some faculty and staff of the College of Health Sciences.
