Vice-Chancellor Commissions "Faculty of Arts" Building

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ebenezer Oduro Owusu, commissioned the “Faculty of Arts” Building yesterday, 12th May 2021.

Mr. Charles Kofinti, the Director of the Physical Development and Municipal Services Directorate (PDMSD), gave a brief history of the building. He recounted that the project, which began in 1987, has seen six (6) successive Vice-Chancellors (VCs), the current VC being the seventh (7). Mr. Kofinti noted that the building has three (3) lecture halls with 500, 250 and150 seating capacities. The building also contains 33 offices and four (4) seminar rooms. The design, according to the Director, integrates the academic areas with the office areas and creates buffers with canteen facilities, stationery shops and common rooms.

The Provost of the College of Humanities, Prof. Daniel Frimpong Ofori, expressed his delight at the completion of the project and the fact that the new facility will reduce the infrastructure deficit of the College. He applauded the VC for his tenacity in completing the project and expressed the hope that the building will facilitate teaching, learning, and research.

Before commissioning the building, the VC disclosed that he was a Teaching Assistant in the University during the inception of the project. Little did he know that he would be commissioning the same building 34 years later. He acknowledged the contributions of his predecessors towards the completion of the project and used the opportunity to call on leaders to do same in relation to projects they have the privilege to complete and commission. Prof. Oduro Owusu expressed immense gratitude to the Provost, Prof. Daniel Frimpong Ofori, for supporting the completion of the building with funds from the College’s coffers. He finally urged all to ensure the maintenance of the building for the benefit of posterity.

According to the contractor, Adanko Construction Limited, the project is about 90% complete. The Ag. MD, Madam Rejoice Acorlor, disclosed that the project has been mainly financed with support from the GetFund and University of Ghana lnternally Generated Funds.

The building was dedicated by the Chairman of the University of Ghana Chaplaincy Board, Rev. Dr. Charles Antwi Boasiako.

Present at the ceremony were the College Secretary, College of Humanities, Mrs. Mavis Otoo-Ayeh; the Ag. Director, Public Affairs Directorate, Ms. Eccles Andoh; and members of staff from various units of the University.
