University Of Ghana Remembers Departed Members

The University of Ghana has organized religious services to remember members of the University community who passed away during the 2013/2014 academic year.

Moslem prayers as well as Quaranic Recitations and readings, Translations and the reading of the Hadith were held at the Legon Central Mosque on the first Friday in the month of November.  The event was attended by the various sections of the University Moslem community.

Imam Abubakari Baba, Imam of the Legon Central Mosque

In his exhortation to the faithful, the Imam of the Legon Central Mosque, Imam Abubakari Baba reminded the gathering of the transient nature of life, adding that all human beings will one day depart this life.  He noted that since it was impossible to save the souls of the departed members, it was important for those who are alive to  pray for God’s mercy for them.

Imam Baba was grateful to the University for organizing the event to remember departed members.

Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ernest Aryeetey in brief remarks said occasions such as the Remembrance Day provide a unique opportunity for both Christians and Moslems to unite over an issue of mutual importance such as death.  He thanked the Moslem community for their continued support in building the University.

The Moslem prayers was attended by Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ernest Aryeetey, Apostle Dr. Samuel Asuming-Brempong, Chairman of the Chaplaincy Board and  the Director of Public Affairs, Mrs. Stella A. Amoa as well as other senior members and staff of the Public Affairs Directorate and other units of the University.

Apostle Samuel Yaw Antwi, General Secretary of the Ghana Pentecostal and Charismatic Council

The first Sunday in November was also set aside for the Christian Service.  The service took place at the Great Hall of the University.   Apostle Samuel Yaw Antwi, General Secretary of the Ghana Pentecostal and Charismatic Council in a sermon re-echoed the transient nature of the life of human beings.  He urged the congregation to live lives that please God rather than human beings so as to receive the crown of entering into God’s kingdom at the end of one’s life.  Apostle Antwi cautioned Christians to ensure that their walk with the Lord is consistent and true.

The Scripture readings were done by the Provost of the College of Humanities, Prof. Samuel Agyei-Mensah and the Provost of the College of Health Sciences, Prof. Yaw Tettey.  Thereafter a Roll Call of departed members was done by representatives from the various employee/student associations, UTAG/GAUA, FUSSAG, TEWU and the SRC.  A minute silence was observed for the departed members. 

Intercessory prayers were offered by the President of the University Christian Fellowship (UCF), Mr. Moses Delali Doe entrusting the entire University community into the hands of God for continuous protection.

On behalf of the bereaved families, Prof. S.O. Kuranchie thanked the University for organizing the Remembrance Service. He asked for God’s strength for family members during their period of bereavement.

The Service was officiated by Apostle Dr. Samuel Asuming-Brempong, Chairman of the Chaplaincy Board and Canon Dr. George  Neequaye of the Christ Anglican Church, Legon.  The University of Ghana Jubilee Choir and the Mass Choir at the Department of Music, directed by Mr. T.E. Andoh, former Head of Department of Music and assisted by Dr. Joshua Amuah and Mr. Laing of the Department of Music rendered a beautiful selection of hymns and local praise and worship choruses.  

Remembrance Day is an annual event organized by the University of Ghana to remember members of the University community who passed away in the previous academic year.   It started as started as an inter-faith service known as the All Souls ’ Day, during which Moslem prayers were incorporated into the Service.  Since 2010, there has been a departure from previous years, with two days being set aside to remember departed members, one by the Muslim Community which takes place on the first Friday of November and the other on the first Sunday of November by the Christian Community.

The offertory taken at these Services has so far gone to support needy and bright students registered with the University Students Financial Aid Office.

The Christian Service was attended by Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ernest Aryeetey, Registrar, Mrs. Mercy Haizel-Ashia, the Director of Public Affairs, Mrs. Stella A. Amoa.  and the Priest-in-Charge of the Christ Anglican Church Legon, Rev. Canon George Neequaye.
