The French Ambassador to Ghana and Prof. Offei, Pro-Vice-Chancellor, ASA
The University of Ghana has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the University of Bordeaux, France, to establish a framework for cooperation between the two Universities.
The Pro-Vice-Chancellor in charge of Academic and Student Affairs, Prof. Samuel Kwame Offei, who signed on behalf of the University of Ghana, said the efforts made by the French Embassy in Ghana to facilitate the signing of the MoU, marked a significant chapter for the University. He noted that the Agreement would ensure joint participation in research and academic development beneficial to students and staff. He thanked the French delegation and the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC) for the collaboration which he anticipated would materialize into greater opportunities in the ensuing years.
Explaining the details of Agreement, the French Ambassador to Ghana, His Excellency Francois Pujolas noted that the memorandum of understanding would help facilitate the development of both academic exchanges between the University of Bordeaux and the University of Ghana, as well as support mutual research activities. The MOU he said, would also foster long lasting partnership through the commitment of the French Embassy to develop interactions with French companies to invest and reinvest in the country, as well as offer scholarships and employment opportunities to Ghanaian students with the requisite competencies. He also commended the University of Ghana for attaching high priority to the teaching and learning of the French language.
The CEO of the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC), Mrs. Mawuena Trebarh expressed delight on the role the Centre played in facilitating the formalization of the agreement, adding that the GIPC would continue to support and sustain the relationship between the two Institutions.
Prior to the signing, the Director of the International Programmes Office, University of Ghana, Professor Naa Ayikailey Adamafio made a presentation on the academic programmes, colleges and satellite campuses of the university. She said the University continues to make strides in its admissions, noting that the current student population was about 40,000 which includes international students from 50 countries.
On her part, the Vice President of University of Bordeaux, Professor Maria Binet said, the statistics was commendable adding that the University of Bordeaux was also making similar progress.
Present at the signing were the Registrar of the University of Ghana, Mrs. Mercy Haizel-Ashia, the Provost of the College of Humanities, Prof. Samuel Agyei-Mensah, and the Assistant Registrar at the Office of Pro-Vice-Chancellor (ASA), Mr. Benedict Adjei Fosu. Also present were the French delegation, comprising representatives from the French Embassy and the University of Bordeaux as well as Faculty members of the University of Ghana.
