University of Ghana holds July 2019 Congregation

 

The University of Ghana has held four sessions for the July 19 and 20, Congregation ceremonies scheduled for students who completed various programmes of study from the College of Humanities (CoH), College of Basic and Applied Sciences (CBAS), College of Education (CoE) and College of Health Sciences (CHS).

 A total of 3,223 students graduated with various degrees from the Colleges of the University as follows: COH Undergraduate programmes (948); CBAS (1,053) CHS & COE (496); and COH Graduate programmes (726).

There were four sessions held at the Great Hall of the University; two sessions each on Friday, July 19 and Saturday, July 20. The first day’s Congregation ceremonies were dedicated to the COH (Undergraduate Programme) and CBAS graduating 948 and 1,053 students respectively. CHS and COE had a joint session on the second day to graduate a total of 496 students. The afternoon session was dedicated to the COH (Graduate Programmes) graduating a total of  726 students.

Prof. Yaw Twumasi, Chairman of the University Council presided over the first and third sessions while Prof. Ebenezer Oduro Owusu, Vice-Chancellor and Prof. Baffour Agyeman- Duah, a member of the University Council presided over the second and final sessions respectively on behalf of the Chancellor of the University.

Delivering the Vice-Chancellor’s address, Prof. Ebenezer Oduro Owusu highlighted developments within the University during the 2018/2019 academic year. He indicated that a total of 11,216 students consisting 5828 males and 5388 females enrolled during the year under review.  With this statistics, he added that the University was steadily achieving its objective of an even male to female ratio.

The Vice-Chancellor also commended the various strategic teams for driving the transformational agenda of the University and intimated that a Laboratory Modernization Implementation Committee has been constituted to raise funds for the establishment of a state-of-the art and world class laboratories and research facilities at the University of Ghana.

He seized the occasion to call on the graduands as well as alumni of the University to participate in the UG@70 Homecoming Weekend scheduled from Friday, August 9 to Sunday, August 11, 2019.

Mr. Andy Mensah, a Human Resource Partner for IBM Ghana; Mr. Joe K. Mensah, Vice President & Country Manager of Kosmos Energy Ghana HC; Mrs. Ellen Ohene-Afoakwah, Director, Corporate Banking, Barclays Bank Ghana; and Dr. (Mrs.) Irene Stella Agyenim-Boateng, Director of Human Resources, Volta River Authority (VRA) were selected for their outstanding contribution to society to inspire the graduands as guest speakers for the four sessions respectively.

Valedictory speeches were delivered by Mr. Dennis Siayor, Ms. Michelle Martha Ayo Segla, Ms Harriet Naa Quarnor Dodoo and Mr. Frederick Boamah on behalf of COH (BSc. Administration), CBAS, CHS/COE and COH (Graduate Programmes) graduating class respectively.

In the course of the second session dedicated to the College of Basic and Applied Sciences, Mr. Kofi Afari, a Senior Assistant Farm Manager, Forest and Horticultural Crops Research Centre (FOHCREC), Kade received a citation and cheque prize for the Best Worker Award 2018 (College of Basic and Applied Sciences).
