University Of Ghana And University Of York Organizes Joint Workshop On Managing Small Scale Mining

The Centre for Climate Change and Sustainability Studies, University of Ghana, recently hosted a three-day inception workshop on the project titled: “Managing small-scale mining: Assessing the potential for a more environmentally sustainable and socially-inclusive small-scale gold mining industry in Ghana”. The project is a collaboration between researchers from University of Ghana led by Prof. Chris Gordon and Prof. Nana Aba A. Amfo and University of York, United Kingdom, led by Prof. Henrice Altink.

The purpose of the workshop was to fine-tune the research questions presented in the project proposal, by incorporating the views of key stakeholders involved in the small scale mining industry in Ghana, as well as other interested parties from academia, government agencies and the media. It was also to define the activities of Work Package Groups and to train project staff and interested UG students in the application of Participatory Action Research Methodology. Presentations were made by the Projects Leads, Association of Small-Scale Miners, Ghana Forestry Commission and Citi FM.

Present at the opening ceremony were Professor Francis Dodoo, Pro-Vice Chancellor. Research, Innovation and Development, and Professor Daniel K. Asiedu, Provost, College of Basic and Applied Science.
