UG Working Group on Climate Change Centre of Excellence holds Proposal Development Write-Shop

Members of the UG Climate Change Working Group

The Working Group of the Trans-Disciplinary Research into Climate Change Adaptation Centre of Excellence of the University of Ghana has held a write-shop to develop a number of proposals for research funding in the area of climate change adaptation and mitigation. The write-shop was also aimed at discussing the progress on the development of a book on Climate Change in Ghana.

Addressing the members of the Working Group, the Convener, Prof. Samuel Adiku reiterated the need for the group to make the needed impact in the area of Climate Change research and development. He urged the group not to relent on its effort in making that needed impact.

The group developed two proposals: Mitigating Climate Change and Improving the Livelihoods of Vulnerable Communities in 2 Agro Ecological Zones of Ghana: The Use of Green Technologies and Social and Biosphere Enhancement for Climate Change Adaptation in Ghana (SBECHAM) which  are expected to be fully completed by the middle of October 2016.

The proposal on Mitigating Climate Change and Improving the Livelihoods of Vulnerable Communities in 2 Agro Ecological Zones of Ghana: The Use of Green Technologies has among its targets, five ecological zones, women and youth. It is expected to have components that will develop structures for sustainable land use, reduction of carbon emissions in communities and access to carbon credits for improved livelihood and also on sensitization of communities on the effects of climate change on the environment.

The proposal on Social and Biosphere Enhancement for Climate Change Adaptation in Ghana (SBECHAM) has among its targets, Smallholder farmers, Policy makers, Development Partners and Researchers. The proposal is expected to generate knowledge to enhance climate change adaptation by improving the resilience of the social and biophysical environments.

The group also completed the outline on the proposed book on Climate Change in Ghana. The outline is expected to have the following chapters: (i) General introduction to Climate Change, (ii) Evidence of Climate Change in Ghana, (iii) Climate Change and Agriculture, Climate Change and Forestry, Climate Change and Health, Climate Change and Livelihoods, Climate Change and Gender, Climate Change Negotiations, Climate Change Policy and two Case Studies on Wind mill irrigation/biogas in Anloga and Recycling in Jamestown.

Members of the group included Prof. Samuel Adiku, Dr. Elias Ayuk, Prof. Julius Fobil, Dr. Kwadwo Owusu, Dr. Christiana Amoatey, Prof. P.W. K. Yankson, Prof. Samuel Nii Ardey Codjoe and Mr. Ezekiel Acquaah.
