UG Unveils Bust and Holds Send-off Dinner for former Vice-Chancellor

The University of Ghana has held two colourful ceremonies to mark Prof. Ernest Aryeetey’s successful completion of tenure as Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana. Prof. Ernest Aryeetey, Professor of Economics, was Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana for the period 2010 – 2016.

Preceding a farewell dinner reception in his honour, was the unveiling of the bust of Prof. Ernest Aryeetey as the 11th Executive Head of the University of Ghana. The unveiling was done at the Convocation Group of Buildings.

Making brief remarks before the unveiling, the Registrar, Mrs. Mercy Haizel-Ashia, upheld the hard work and sense of purpose of Prof. Ernest Aryeetey. She praised him for his altruistic and cordial relationship with officials and members of the University community. She commended Prof. Aryeetey for the numerous initiatives and projects to improve both the academic and infrastructure of the University during his 6-year tenure as Vice-Chancellor, adding that, the University community would greatly miss him.

The Chairman of the University Council, Prof. Justice Samuel Kofi Date-Bah in an address during the dinner reception was full of praise for the exemplary leadership of the former Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ernest Aryeetey. He underscored the significant initiatives led by Prof. Aryeetey to give the University of Ghana an exceptional facelift, mentioning in particular, his vision and insightful contribution to the University’s Strategic Plan of becoming a world-class research intensive University. He congratulated Prof. Ernest Aryeetey for the successful completion of tenure and wished him well in his future pursuits.

Mr. Kwesi Yankey, Chairman of the University of Ghana Alumni Association on his part shared his memories of the former Vice-Chancellor. He described Prof. Ernest Aryeetey as a true friend; a goal-oriented person, and an astute academic leader. He mentioned the immense support of Prof. Ernest Aryeetey to the University Alumni Association, with respect to resources needed by the Association to engage effectively with alumni of the University and other stakeholders of the University.

Some presentations were made to Prof. Aryeetey, from the University, his family, other units of the University as well as other organizations, groups and associations.

A 15-minute documentary celebrating the achievements of Prof. Ernest Aryeetey was shown during the ceremony. 

Present at the ceremony were the Chief Justice of Ghana, Her Ladyship Justice Georgina Theodora Wood, the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Nii Osah Mills, Members of Council, university officials, alumni, family members of Prof. Ernest Aryeetey, and other invited guests.
