UG Makes Strides in Increasing Student Accommodation

The University of Ghana is making strides in increasing student accommodation. When completed, the Africa Intergras Hostel Project will house 904 students.

Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, who was recently conducted round Project site urged the project team to keep up the good work and adhere to the timelines in order for the rooms to be ready for occupancy soon, to support the efforts management is making to augment student accommodation.

Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Research, Innovation and Development, Prof. Felix A. Asante, who is also the Chair of the Infrastructure Development Committee (IDC) conducted the Vice-Chancellor round the facility. Together with members of the IDC, the delegation interacted with the contractors to assess the level of work executed. The team also had the opportunity to familiarise themselves with the two-in-a room facility, reading rooms, laundry rooms and offices under construction. The emergency exists, mini-libraries and passages to link the blocks were also inspected.

Mr. Peter Abalansah, Deputy Director, Physical Development and Municipal Services Directorates (PDMSD) noted that though the rooms will be metered, provision has been made for the use of solar power at the common areas. He gave the assurance that the project team will put in their best to meet the target of completing the project in five to six months.

Accompanying the Vice-Chancellor on this tour was Mrs. Emelia Agyei-Mensah, Registrar; Professor Daniel Frimpong Ofori, Provost, College of Humanities; Prof. Rosina Kyerematen, Dean of Student Affairs; Dr. Charles Wiafe-Akentan Head of Halls; Mrs. Elizier T. Ameyaw-Buronyah, Director, Public Affairs.

Members of the IDC present during this exercise were Dr. George Sam Mends, Project Consultant; Architect Charles Kofinti, Director, PDMSD/Project Director; Surveyor Ernest Boakye, Deputy Director, PDMSD; Engineer Florence Dzifa Mensah, Structural Engineer, PDMSD; Dr. Kwaku Oppong Asante, Akuafo Hall Master; Mr. Sampson Owusu Afriyie, Director of Logistics; Mr. Evans Kwabena Owusu, Assistant Registrar, PDMSD and IDC Secretary.
