UG launches Prof. Kwapong’s Memoirs

The books on display at the ceremony

The University of Ghana has launched Memoirs of Prof. Alexander Adum Kwapong at a colourful ceremony held at the ISSER Conference Hall.

Justice Prof. S.K. Date-Bah, Chairman of the University Council

Justice Prof. S.K. Date-Bah, Chairman of the University Council, performed the launch of the Book entitled: “A Life in Education:  A Memoir”. He noted that the posthumous publication of Prof. Kwapong’s memoirs documents extensively the social history of Ghana from the colonial days into contemporary times, and throws light particularly on the development of education in Ghana.

Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ernest Aryeetey

Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ernest Aryeetey in his opening remarks recalled that Professor Alexander Adum Kwapong was the first Ghanaian to hold the position of Vice Chancellor of the University of Ghana for the period 1966-1976.   There is no doubt, he said, that Prof. Kwapong influenced many developments at the University of Ghana, and the University also influenced many of the things that he did subsequently.  Extolling Prof. Kwapong, Vice Chancellor Aryeetey noted that by all accounts, he was both an excellent university teacher and a great university administrator.

He acknowledged those who had worked tirelessly with Prof. Kwapong as he worked on the book, and bemoaned the fact that Prof. Kwapong was not alive to witness this day.   He paid glowing tribute to Prof. Kwapong’s memory for taking the time to write this autobiography, and thereby give the world an opportunity to know him even better, and through him, get to understand the University of Ghana and its early years.
