UG Hosts 8th Pan-African Universities Debate Championship

The University of Ghana is hosting the 8th Pan-African Universities Debate Championship (PAUDC) dubbed “Legon 2015” from 8th to 17th December 2015. The championship is on the theme, “Debating Solutions for Africa: The Role of the Youth in Pan-Africanism, Democracy and the Rule of Law”.

It is being organized by the Sports Directorate and is expected to bring together between 250 and 400 debaters with accompanying officials from tertiary institutions across Africa, to promote the culture of debate and civic participation. The participating countries include Botswana, Burkina Faso, Cameroun, Ghana, Gambia, Kenya, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Lesotho, Liberia, Rwanda, Serra Leon, South Africa, Togo and Zimbabwe.

The University of Ghana bided to host the 8th edition of the PAUDC in December, 2013 at the University of Calabar in Nigeria and was ratified in December, 2014 at the University of Limpopo in South Africa. The Local Organsing Committee of the “Legon 2015” together with Tournament Advisory Council (mainly Senior Members), Sports Directorate Management Committee and a network of UG Senior Members have contributed to intense planning and preparation for the past 11 months to ensure that University of Ghana hosts a very memorable championship. A team of dedicated student volunteers from University of Ghana and other Ghanaian Universities have also been tirelessly contributing towards the planning and preparations for the tournament.

The tournament will follow the World Universities Debate Championship style, which is the British Parliamentary style of debating (popularly known as “BP”). With the BP as in many debating styles, debaters are engaged in an intellectual discourse to determine their knowledge on topical issues in Africa and beyond.

The Championship promises to be the most exhilarating and electrifying debate championship with nine intense preliminary debate rounds, Octos, Quarter-final, Semi-final and the Grand Finale.

An opening ceremony will be held on Thursday 10th December, 2015 form 5:00 pm to 7:00pm at the Great Hall of the University of Ghana.
