UG to Establish BoG Chair in Finance and Economics

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, has led a delegation from the University to sign an agreement with the Bank of Ghana to support the establishment of the Bank of Ghana Chair in Finance and Economics to be hosted at the University of Ghana Business School (UGBS) and the Department of Economics, College of Humanities.

The Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr. Ernest Addison warmly welcomed the delegation from the University. He explained that the agreement arises from a proposal the Bank received from the University to collaborate on promoting research in the financial sector. “The Bank has always been interested in proposals like this”, Dr. Addison said.  He stated that the agreement is for a 3-year period and worth three million Ghana Cedis (GHc3,000,000). The Governor indicated that, “it is expected that the Chair would advance the Bank’s expectation in the formulation of research to support policy”.

On her part, Prof. Amfo, expressed appreciation to the Bank of Ghana for their generosity. “This is a huge boost in our efforts to the attainment of our vision of becoming a research-intensive University and also our mission to continue to contribute to national development and to be globally relevant”, stated the Vice-Chancellor.

Establishing the timeliness of the agreement, Prof. Amfo, noted that as the University enters its 75th year, it is poised to do more in the country and in Africa. She highlighted the need for sound economic planning by setting in place appropriate financial systems. “The University of Ghana has the resources and the expertise to facilitate this kind of research and the Bank of Ghana has the funds to support us .… I promise that the University of Ghana will do everything within its power to fulfil their part of the agreement to ensure that it’s not just going to last for three years, but it will be for the long haul”.
