The University of Ghana 100 meters sprinter, Solomon Kweku Hammond, has qualified for the World Under 20 Athletics Championship to be staged in Cali, Columbia in August 2022.

Solomon, a second-year Diploma student reading Public Administration, made a time of 10.53 seconds in the 100 meter final in the Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) II Athletics Championship held at the Cape Coast Stadium to book his ticket for the world championship.

Solomon expressed his excitement about his qualification, adding that before running in the finals, he was not aware winning the finals qualifies an athlete for the world championship.

“I am happy to represent Ghana at the World U-20 Athletics Championship. I have trained very hard from the beginning of the year. The other championships I represented UG in prepared me and gave me the courage to compete against other nationals in the West Africa sub-region. I will put in extra efforts at training to be in the best of form for Cali”, he declared.

Solomon also won a gold medal for Ghana in the 4x100 meter race with a time of 40.10 seconds.

Ghana won a total of 26 gold, 13 silver, and 5 bronze medals in the championship. Other West African countries that participated in the championship were Burkina Faso, Ivory Coast, Senegal, Mali, Benin, Liberia, Niger and Togo.
