UG Alumni Association Holds Fundraising Dinner

The Vice Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Prof. Ernest Aryeetey has said that the University of Ghana is seeking ways to find solutions to the challenges facing it as an educational institution. Speaking at an alumni event, “Vice-Chancellor’s Alumni and friends fund raising dinner” held at the Vice Chancellor’s Lodge, Prof. Aryeetey said even though there are a myriad of challenges, many of these are being tackled.  He was however confident that alumni and friends of the University would rally to support the University to overcome them.

With the Vice Chancellor as lead host, Dr. Albert Walter Barnor, Managing Director of the National Trust Holding Company (NTHC) was the co-host for the fundraising event.

The Chairman of the University of Ghana Alumni Association, Mr. Paa Kwesi Yankey said the target for the fund raising was GH¢200,000 which he said would go to support projects at the University. He said the Alumni Association was proud to support the University realize its objectives especially in recent times when funding for Public Universities was becoming a challenge.  He mentioned some of the on-going alumni-sponsored projects as the Beautification of the Noguchi Roundabout, the Mother’s wing at the University Hospital, and other contributions to some of the student halls of residence.  He acknowledged the positive contributions management was making towards realizing the University’s vision of becoming a world-class research-intensive university and said alumni were proud of the sterling achievements being made towards this vision and the strategic objectives stated in the 10-year Strategic Plan.

In his remarks, Dr. Barnor bemoaned the apathy some alumni demonstrated when called upon to give back to their alma mater to support developmental projects.  He urged alumni not to forget the pivotal role the University of Ghana played in achieving their educational goals.  He said giving back to the University would go a long way to enhance the image of the university and instill in alumni, a feeling of pride in the institution.

The Registrar, Mrs. Mercy Haizel-Ashia lauded the Alumni Association for the contributions it continues to make towards developmental projects and student engagement.  While promising to avail herself by attending meetings of the Alumni Council, she also called on alumni to ensure management is well briefed on developmental projects, to allow the University receive the appropriate support required.   A few alumni also gave optional remarks, dwelling on the relationship between the University and the alumni front.  They all urged alumni to contribute their quota to their alma mater.  Among them were Ambassador James Aggrey-Orleans, Mr. Reginald Laryea, Mr. Kofi Dua-Adonteng, and Mr. Emmanuel Akwetey. 

Among the guests were some members of the Alumni Council, other alumni, and University officials, which included the Pro-Vice Chancellor for Research, Innovation and Development, Prof. John O. Gyapong, Pro-Vice Chancellor for Academic and Students Affairs, Prof. Samuel Kwame Offei, the Registrar, Mrs. Mercy Haizel-Aisha, Provost of the College of Education, Rev. Prof. Cephas Omenyo, Director of Public Affairs, Mrs. Stella A. Amoa.
