Alumni of the University of Ghana 1993 year group have presented a cheque of GH₵50,000 to the UG @70 Endowment Fund. This is in partial fulfilment of their pledge to donate a total of GH₵100,000 to the Fund.

A delegation of the 1993 Alumni led by the Chairman, Prof. Robert Darko Osei who is also the Vice Dean of the School of Graduate Studies called on the Vice-Chancellor to make the donation.

The team leader indicated that the 1993 Year Group, which is celebrating its 25th year since graduating from the University had pledged their support during the official launch of the UG@70 Endowment Fund.  He further pledged the group’s resolve to ensure that the Endowment Fund becomes a success.

Receiving the donation, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ebenezer Oduro Owusu hailed the group as pacesetters since the 1993 year group is the first ever Alumni Year Group to donate towards the UG@70 Endowment Fund.

Prof. Oduro Owusu reiterated the intended purpose of the Endowment Fund which includes scholarships, bursaries, tuition waivers, research grants for students and faculty, additional facilities and resources to enhance research and teaching through the provision of equipment, teaching aids and space, upgrading the quality of internet coverage in all University of Ghana campuses and increased access to libraries. It is also envisaged that the funds so generated will be used for Graduate training and thesis research.

The Vice-Chancellor assured the year group that their donation would be used for its primary purpose and urged them to monitor the management of their donation. He also used the opportunity to call on other stakeholders and the general public to contribute generously to the UG@70 Endowment Fund.

The Deputy Registrar in charge of Alumni Relations, Mrs. Christy Badu expressed gratitude to the year group and hoped other year groups would emulate their generous gesture.

It will be recalled that the University of Ghana in commemoration of its 70th anniversary, established an Endowment Fund to provide additional non-restricted funding (to supplement that provided by Government) to enable the University improve the delivery on her mandate. The UG@70 Endowment Fund was launched by Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo, President of the Republic, on Monday May 7, 2018.
