Tokyo Medical and Dental University Students and Faculty Visit College of Health Sciences

A group of eight students and two faculty members from the Tokyo Medical and Dental University have visited the College of Health Sciences.

Accompanied by Rev. Dr. Nicholas Nii Trebi, a faculty at the School of Biomedical and Allied Health Sciences (SBAHS), the group toured the La General Hospital, School of Biomedical and Allied Health Sciences, School of Nursing and Midwifery, University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC), Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIMR) and the International Programmes Office (IPO) of the University.

At the La General Hospital, they observed a typical hospital setting in Ghana in order to appreciate healthcare delivery in the country.  The Medical Superintendent at the Hospital, Dr. Ebenezer Oduro-Mensah welcomed the delegation and conducted them round the various wards of the Hospital.

At the School of Biomedical and Allied Health Sciences, the group participated in a lecture delivered by Prof. (Maj. Rtd.) George A. Asare, Head, Department of Medical Laboratory Sciences. The students expressed their excitement about the opportunity to interact with Ghanaian students.

The delegation was also at the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) to familiarise themselves with a Teaching Hospital in Ghana. They were highly impressed to see numerous ultra-modern equipment and facilities at the Centre.  They were received by the Human Resource Manager at the Centre, Mr. Francis Kyereboah.

The students also visited the Noguchi Advanced Laboratories at the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIMR), named after the famous Japanese researcher, Dr. Hideyo Noguchi.  At Noguchi, they also participated in a Laboratory work with Dr. Anthony Ablordey of the Department of Bacteriology.

The International Programmes Office (IPO) of the University also organised a forum for the delegation to interact with their Ghanaian counterparts on various aspects of Japanese culture, living, health, education, entertainment and more.  The Assistant Registrar at the IPO, Mr. Daniel Hormeku made a presentation on the University of Ghana and on Ghana.

The visit by the delegation from the Tokyo Medical and Dentist University was concluded with a dinner organised by the Provost of the College of Health Sciences, Rev. Professor Patrick F. Ayeh-Kumi in their honour.  The Provost expressed the College’s delight to host them and asked both parties to work hard to strengthen the friendship they had started.
