Sod Cutting Ceremony to Extend ISSER Conference Facility Held

A sod cutting ceremony has been performed at the Institute of Statistical, Social and Economic Research (ISSER) to extend its main Conference facility.  The project is aimed at enhancing research, teaching and dissemination to create an enabling environment for students. 

Prof. Peter Quartey, Director, ISSER, in his welcome address, expressed delight over the commencement of the project. He also encouraged the Physical Development and Municipal Services Directorate (PDMSD) to ensure that the construction of the facility is completed within the stipulated time.

Prof. Felix A. Asante, a former Director of ISSER, in his remarks noted that, the extension of the building will create room for the increasing staff at the institute. He said the project consists of a 40-50 seating capacity library, a 40-50 seating computer lab, conference rooms and a gymnasium.

Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, Pro- Vice-Chancellor, Academic and Student Affairs (ASA), who represented the Vice-Chancellor, congratulated ISSER for the commencement of the project which she said, is expected to be completed within 18 months. She acknowledged ISSER’s continuous contribution to helping the University attain its objective of becoming a research-intensive University. She charged the contractors to work hard to ensure the completion of the work within the stipulated time.

“I congratulate ISSER, its Director, former Directors, researchers and staff, on their continued efforts to lead the pursuit of the University’s strategic objective of becoming a research-intensive University and for promoting the interface between the university and its stakeholders through dissemination of its research outputs” Prof. Nana Aba Amfo said.

Mr. Charles Kofinti, Director, Physical Development and Municipal Services Directorate, commended the Institute for embarking on the expansion project and urged the contractors to adhere to all construction rules and regulations of the university.

Mr. Kwame Danquah, Contractor, Antarctic Contract Works Limited who spoke on behalf of the contractors for the project, pleaded with ISSER to allow them undertake the construction with little or no interference, urging ISSER to route all concerns to PDMSD for their attention. He gave assurance of abiding by the rules and also to complete the project on schedule.

In September 2008, ISSER made history as the first unit of the university to use its internally-generated funds to construct a facility.  The sod-cutting ceremony for the main Conference facility took place under the directorship of Prof. Ernest Aryeetey, a former Director of ISSER and was performed by Prof. C.N.B. Tagoe, the then Vice-Chancellor.
