The Tony and Awele Elumelu Foundation of Nigeria has presented academic awards to six students of the University of Ghana who excelled in their various academic programmes during the 2014/2015 academic year.
The awards, which are worth $11,400 for the student recipients at the Undergraduate Level and $2,800 for Post-Graduate recipients, was instituted following a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the University of Ghana and Officials of the Foundation.

Welcoming the delegation to the University, the Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Academic and Student Affairs, Prof. Samuel Kwame Offei, noted that the University of Ghana academic awards are aimed at motivating students who excel in their various programmes of study. This he said would spur other students on to work hard towards achieving awards in the future. He underscored the University’s commitment to create a congenial atmosphere and environment for students to study and excel in their academic pursuits. Prof. Offei was full of appreciation to the Foundation for their generous support, and expressed the hope that the Foundation would continue to partner and support the University in their subsequent entrepreneurship programmes.

A Representative of the Foundation, Mrs. Ighoroje Arume, expressed her organization’s commitment to promoting and empowering entrepreneurs across Africa. She hinted that the Foundation has so far given awards to 130 students from 16 universities across Nigeria and three other West African Universities. She maintained that, two of the Foundation’s Entrepreneurship Programmes were expected to start in January next year, and as such, all University of Ghana students should take advantage of the initiative and apply with their business ideas. Mrs. Arume expressed gratitude to the University for the warm reception accorded the foundation during the visit.
The awards ceremony was witnessed by the Pro-Vice-Chancellor, in charge of Research, Innovation and Development, Prof. John Gyapong, the Provost of the College of Health Sciences, Prof. Yao Tettey, the Provost of the College of Basic and Applied Sciences, Prof. Ebenezer Oduro Owusu, the Dean of the School of Agriculture, Prof. John Ofosu-Anim, the Acting Dean of the School of Performing Arts, Prof. Kofi Agyekum, Prof. S.K. Sefa-Dedeh, Ag. Dean, School of Engineering Sciences, Mrs. Gladys Okyere-Boateng, Admissions Officer, some faculty members and senior administrators, as well as parents of some of the beneficiaries.

Prof. John Gyapong congratulated the awardees for their hard work and advised that they further develop themselves to enable them to join their respective Departments as Faculty members to contribute to University’s vision.
Prof. Yao Tettey, Provost of the College of Health Sciences, on his part, acknowledged the University’s efforts at maintaining high standards, which he noted has attracted various organisations to the University to institute similar academic award schemes for students.
Prof. Ebenezer Owusu, Provost of the College of Basic and Applied Sciences also advised the beneficiaries to work harder, reminding them that “there is always reward for hard work.”

On behalf of the recipients, Ms. Vanessa Appah-Gyamenah, Best Graduating Student in Economics expressed gratitude to the foundation on behalf of the awardees.
The award recipients were ; Ms. Vanessa Appah-Gyamenah ,Best Graduating Student in Economics; Mr. Joseph Yeboah Nortey , Best Graduating Student in Engineering; Ms. Emma Adom, Best Graduating Student in Agriculture; and Dr. George Akyea Blankson, Best Graduating Student in Medicine. For the post graduate categories, Mr. Desmond Okpoti Koney, received the Best Graduating MBA Student in Accounting award, while Mr. Bernard Kofi Sarpong received the Best Graduating MPhil Student in Economics award.
