School of Graduate Studies Organises Thesis Supervision Workshop

The School of Graduate Studies has organised a Thesis Supervision Workshop for faculty members of the University of Ghana.  The workshop, which was held on Thursday 6th and Friday 7th June, 2019 at the ISSER Conference Facility had a total number of 197 participants.

In his opening remarks, the Dean of the School of Graduate Studies, Prof. Kwaku Tano–Debrah, informed participants that the purpose of the workshop was to test and receive input from participants for the tailor-made manual that is being developed for supervisors. This manual, he said,  will help to improve thesis output and graduate turnout, discuss challenges faced by examiners and students in relation to thesis writing and supervision and to provide input for a proposed accreditation of MPhil/PhD supervisors.

Participants were taken through various activities in the course of the workshop. These included individual exercises, online surveys, group discussions and brainstorming sessions. The topics discussed covered Effective Supervision, Expectations of Supervisors & Students, Monitoring Progress of Students and Dealing with Conflicts & Problems.

The highly participative workshop ended with a plenary session moderated by Prof. Michael Tagoe and Prof. Robert Darko Osei, doctoral students experiences which were shared by Mr Fred Amankwah-Kwapong (Acting President) and Mr. Patrick Mahama (Member) of the Doctoral Researchers Association of Ghana (DRAG) and an evaluation of the workshop. .

Fletcher (Dean, School of Leadership and Education), Prof. Esther Sakyi-Dawson (Immediate Past Director, Quality Assurance Unit), Prof. Audrey Gadzekpo (Dean, School of Communication and Information Studies) and Prof. Olivia Kwapong (Head, Adult Education). Others present included Mrs. Stella Dovlo (SGS Administrator, SGS) and Ms. Loretta Otinkorang (Assistant Registrar, SGS).
