NOTICE OF DEATH

Emeritus Professor George Benneh

 

It is with deep regret that we announce the death of former Vice-Chancellor, Emeritus Professor George Benneh, which occurred on Thursday, 11th February, 2021. He was 86. Emeritus Professor Benneh was the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana from 1992 to 1996.

Emeritus Professor George Benneh, was appointed Lecturer on 1st October, 1964, in the then Department of Geography, University of Ghana and served as Senior Lecturer (1973-1976); Associate Professor (1976 to 1989) and was promoted Professor in 1989.

He served the University in various other capacities, including as Pro Vice-Chancellor from 1984-1988. He was a member of several University Boards and Committees, Department level committees and the Commonwealth Hall Council.

The Chancellor, Mrs. Mary Chinery-Hesse, and the Chairman of Council, Professor Yaw Twumasi, led a delegation including the Vice-Chancellor, Professor E.O Owusu, former Vice-Chancellor, Professor Akilagpa Sawyer, members of University of Ghana Senior Management, and some faculty members from the Department of Geography and Resource Development, to visit the family of Emeritus Professor Benneh on Monday, 15th February, 2021, to commiserate with the family.

The University has been informed that the family will join a Mass Service at the Christ The King Church, Accra, on Thursday, 18th February, 2021, at 6.30 a.m. for the one-week observation.

The University mourns with the wife, Mrs. Adelaide Benneh, children and family of Emeritus Professor George Benneh.

May the soul of our former Vice-Chancellor Rest in Perfect Peace.
