The Minister of Education, Hon. Dr. Matthew Opoku-Prempeh has performed the launch of a mass disinfection exercise in educational institutions in the country.
This he said is part of preparations for the return of pupils and students to their institutions following the closure of these institutions in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Minister paid glowing tribute to His Excellency The President of the Republic, whose exemplary leadership in handling the pandemic in the country, he said, had been recognised in Ghana and all over the world. He mentioned that the mass disinfection exercise would help prevent the spread of the virus which had affected many people and claimed lives in many parts of the world and in Ghana. The Minister was grateful to the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana, who he noted, was the Chairman of Vice-Chancellors Ghana, for allowing the programme to take place at the University of Ghana.
The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ebenezer Oduro Owusu, in welcoming the Minister of Education, acknowledged government’s efforts in handling the COVID-19 pandemic in the country, said that the exercise was an important one which will provide the necessary assurance to the students as they return to complete their studies and their final examinations. He indicated that the exercise would be closely monitored to ensure that the correct proportions of disinfecting agents are used. He urged Zoomlion to provide excellent services throughout.
At the University of Ghana, the exercise is expected to cover all student residences, academic areas, the markets (Bush Canteen, Night Market), other areas on the Legon campus, in addition to the Accra City Campus and the Korle-Bu campus.
The brief ceremony was attended by officials from the Ministry of Health, Ghana Education Service, the University of Ghana and also from Zoomlion.
