Management of the University of Ghana Call on Incoming Chancellor of the University

Management of the University and Mrs. Mary Chinery-Hesse 

Management of the University of Ghana has called on Mrs. Mary Chinery-Hesse at her residence in Accra.  Mrs. Mary Chinery-Hesse, was recently appointed to succeed His Excellency Mr. Kofi Annan when he retires at the end of July this year.

The delegation from the University was led by the Chairman of Council, Professor Yaw Twumasi, the ViceChancellor, Professor Ebenezer Oduro Owusu, Registrar, Mrs. Mercy Haizel-Ashia and the Director of Public Affairs Directorate, Mrs. Stella A. Amoa.  

In brief remarks, Mrs. Chinery-Hesse expressed her gratitude to management for the honour done her and visit to congratulate her. She reminisced on her years at Legon, and paid glowing tribute to the Chairman of Council for the important role played in her education as a student, and assuring management of her willingness to ensure continuity and sustain the integrity of the University.

“Working with the United Nations makes you humble because you are interacting with the whole world. I promise that we will listen a lot and come out with the best for the university. As there is always room for improvement, we will work together as a team to ensure that our products are beneficial to the nation and continue to retain our position as thepremier institution.”

According to her, much is expected of the institution as it is at the centre of the world. She thereby pledged her full corporation in the attainment of the University’s vision of becoming a world class research-intensive institution.

“We are expected as an institution to be trail-blazers because our country is at the centre of the world.”

Mrs. Chinery-Hesse who has also been an ardent ambassador of Girl-Child Education noted that, she hopes during her tenure to focus on girl-women empowerment in order to ensure that together with men, society is improved.  

In brief remarks the Chairman of Council, Prof. Yaw Twumasi expressed joy at her election and congratulated her on her new role. He welcomed her to the premier University and assured her of the University’s readiness to work closely with her.

Earlier, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ebenezer Oduro Owusu assured the incoming Chancellor of management’s utmost support in her new role to make the premier University a model for the country and the continent.

The Registrar and the Director of Public Affairs on behalf of management later presented some university publications and memorabilia to the incoming Chancellor..

Also present were family members of Mrs. Chinery-Hesse.

The incoming Chancellor, would officially assume office on August 1, 2018.

Mrs. Chinery-Hesse is the first female alumnus to be appointed Chancellor of the University of Ghana.
