Institute for Environment and Sanitation Studies Receives Book Donation from Prof. James Saku

Prof. James Saku of Frostburg State University, Maryland, USA has donated books to the Institute for Environment and Sanitation Studies (IESS). The donation which comprises a collection on contemporary geographical, environmental and global human development issues were handed to the Institute in a short ceremony held on Wednesday, January 15, 2020.

Receiving the books on behalf of the Institute, the Provost of the College of Basic and Applied Sciences (CBAS), Prof. Daniel Asiedu expressed his profound gratitude to Prof. Saku for the kind gesture. He noted that the donation will add to the Institute’s existing stock and pledged that the books will be secured and made available to faculty and students. He encouraged others to emulate the gesture of donating to the University to help in delivering quality teaching and research.

The Director of IESS, Prof. Kwasi Appeaning Addo also thanked Prof. Saku for the donation indicating that the books were very relevant and beneficial to the faculty and students of IESS and the Department of Geography and Human Resource Development.

Prof. Saku explained that his decision to donate the books followed his interaction with Dr. Jesse Ayivor, a Senior Research Fellow, IESS during the 2019 Congress of American Association of Geographers held in Washington DC. He disclosed that some of the books were collections of his and a retired colleague from Frostburg State University

Prof. Saku holds a Ph.D. in Geography from the University of Saskatchewan, Canada and currently teaches Geography at the Frostburg State University where he served as the Chair of the Geography Department and presently the Coordinator of the African American Studies Programme. In 2017, Prof. Saku came to Ghana to teach in the Department of Geography and Resource Development, University of Ghana as the University of Ghana-Carnegie Diasporan Scholar. He has recently been appointed the Grand Marshall of Graduation at his institution.   

 

Present at the ceremony were Dr. Pabi Opoku, Dr. Daniel Nukpezah, Dr. Benedicta Fosu Mensah, Dr. Samuel Koranteng, Senior Research Fellows, IESS; Dr. Daniel Darko, Research Fellow, IESS; Mr. Peter Osei-Fosu, Senior Assistant Registrar, IESS and other members of faculty.
