East Legon Branch of Rotary Club, Ghana Sponsors The Construction of UG Hospital's Neonatal Intensive Care Unit

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, has cut the sod for the construction of a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at the University Hospital, a project proudly sponsored by the East Legon chapter of Rotary Club, Ghana. 

In her address, Prof. Amfo expressed profound appreciation to the members of the Club for continually spearheading developmental projects in the University community.  “Specifically, I would like to express my utmost appreciation for successfully completing the first phase of this project which saw the children’s block of the University Hospital refurbished. You have also generously agreed to continue with the second phase of the project, which is the construction of NICU, for which we are truly grateful”.

Prof. Amfo noted the significant benefits the project is to the University Hospital, with massive ripple effects which will allow the University to accomplish a different project with the cost savings. She also took the opportunity to urge corporate bodies to support the University in addressing its needs.

In brief remarks, the Acting Director of Institutional Advancement Office, Prof. Dartey-Baah, who chaired the ceremony, expressed appreciation to the Vice-Chancellor for making time to attend the ceremony. He noted that the construction of the University’s NICU was an investment the Legon-East Chapter of Rotary Club, Ghana was making into the lives of the people of the University community and its environs.

Earlier in a welcome address, Dr. Mark Frempong, Director, University Health Services, mentioned that there has been an increase in the number of patients in the Paediatric Unit and the number of pre-term babies either delivered at the hospital or referred from other health facilities. “It is important to emphasise that the decision to take care of pre-term babies in the Paediatric Unit of the University Hospital has been extremely challenging, but very rewarding”, Dr. Frempong said. He was delighted that the construction of NICU was about to commerce. He also extended immerse gratitude to the East Legon branch of Rotary Club, Ghana.

The President of the Club, Rotarian Afriyie, thanked the University for the support and partnership in the construction of the hospital’s NICU. She stated the Club’s commitment to using their human and financial capital to support the local community and national development. She disclosed that through a needs assessment, they settled on constructing and fully equipping the NICU in line with the Club’s 2022 theme of serving to save lives. 

The facility when completed will house the Babies’ Ward, Doctor’s Office and sanitary area.

Delivering the vote of thanks, the Head of the Pediatric Unit, Dr. Agyeiwaa Bonuedie, expressed the paediatric team’s appreciation to the Club for the kind gesture. She was hopeful the project would be completed in time.
