Daily Graphic Celebrates Chancellor on International Women's Day

The Chancellor, Mrs. Mary Chinery-Hesse has been featured by the Graphic Communications Limited to be celebrated in commemoration of the 2022 International Women’s Day.

During the interview, Mrs. Mary Chinery-Hesse acknowledged that though global gender inequality still exists, she takes pride in the outstanding achievements of women who are breaking the bias in all spheres. 

She admitted that till now, women must work much harder than men to be accepted as capable of performing same roles, which should not be.

The Chancellor advised women to acquire highly sought-for skills, prepare adequately, be meticulous and work diligently wherever they find themselves. 

Speaking on ways of getting more women into higher positions, Mrs. Chinery-Hesse called for the creation of more jobs for women, providing resources and opportunities to enhance  quality of life for women. She added that the existence of cultural bias against women needs to be addressed. The Chancellor was full of praise for the late Prof. Ewurama Addy for the good work she did on instilling confidence in girls to excel in Mathematics and Science on the National Science and Maths Quiz competition. 

She also shared personal experiences of how Dr. Kwame Nkrumah and the Daily Graphic capitalised on her graduation from the University of Ghana in 1962 to embark on girl child education campaign to change the mindset of many parents and give young girls a chance to be educated. 

The Chancellor emphasised that  “it is impossible to raise a country with only men because both men and women are partners working together for the good of our country, our families and for ourselves”.

Addressing the theme of the International Women’s Day 2022, which is “Gender equality today for a sustainable tomorrow”, Mrs. Mary Chinery-Hesse urged Ghanaian women to be conscious of their actions in relation to the environment.
