Confucius Institute At The University Of Ghana Hosts Chinese Spring Festival

The Chinese Spring Festival has been celebrated at the University of Ghana Basic School with dazzling fireworks. This is an annual ceremony used to mark the Chinese (Lunar) New Year.

The headmaster of the University of Ghana Basic Schools, Mr. Alfred Codjoe, welcomed the gathering and thanked the Chinese government for its constant support for the study of Chinese in Ghana.

In her remarks, the Chinese Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Ghana, Her Excellency Madam Sun Baohong, expressed gratitude to the University of Ghana for attaching importance to the teaching of the Chinese language and the spread of Chinese culture. She encouraged the learning of Chinese as an important asset in Ghanaian opportunities in China.

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Prof. Ebenezer Oduro Owusu, graced the well-attended ceremony and wished all Chinese and Ghanaians a happy New Year. He thanked all the Chinese chambers of Commerce and Companies for their contribution to the construction of the model Confucius Institute at the University of Ghana.

Later in the ceremony, donations were made to the Confucius Institute by Ghana Association of Chinese Societies and the Ghana Chamber of Commerce, Ghana Chinese News, Wynca Sunshine Agricultural Product and Trading, and Chinese Enterprise Chamber of Commerce.

The Confucius institute seized the opportunity to mark the day with spectacular Chinese cultural display, featuring routines of Chinese dance and recitals, dumpling-making, Chinese paper-cutting, Chinese couplets-writing, Chinese knot-tying and Peking opera facial makeup painting.

Those present at the ceremony included the Registrar, Mrs. Mercy Haizel-Ashia; the Ghanaian Director of the Confucius Institute, Dr. Josephine Dzahene-Quarshie; the Chinese Director of the Confucius Institute, Dr. Meilian Mei; the Chairperson of the Management Board of the University Basic School, Dr. Jemima Anderson; the President of the Ghana Chinese Enterprise Chamber of Commerce, Mr. Tang Hong; and the Deputy Director of Wynca Sunshine Agricultural Product and Trading, Mr. Yao Duyong.
