Confucius Institute Marks International Chinese Language Day with Speech and Talent Show

The Confucius Institute at the University of Ghana has organised a speech and talent show to commemorate the 2023 United Nations International Chinese Language Day. The show featured 19 participants competing in Chinese Language activities such as singing, poetry, acting, and speeches.

The overall winners were Contestant 17, Felix Mensah, who lit up the stage with a stunning dance performance, and Contestant 4, Julia Duncan, who captivated many hearts with an angelic song performance.

Mrs. Emelia Agyei-Mensah, Registrar of the University of Ghana, in her opening remarks acknowledged the Confucius Institute for its ongoing efforts to educate students in the Chinese language and culture.

“I would like to commend the Confucius Institute at the University of Ghana for deeming it important to mark this special day with a contest which aims at showcasing students of UG’s knowledge and proficiency in the Chinese language as well as their talents and skills in Chinese cultural arts and performances,” the Registrar applauded 

Mrs. Agyei-Mensah announced that Management plans to expand Chinese studies at the University of Ghana by integrating more major programmes that include Chinese as a subject.  

“Here at the University of Ghana, efforts are being made to augment the study of Chinese by creating more combined major programmes which include Chinese as a subject. Currently, undergraduate student enrollment for Chinese is well over 1000 and I am aware that similar efforts are being made by other public universities with the establishment of more Confucius Institutes,’’ she added.

Director of the Political Section of the Chinese Embassy in Ghana, Lou Danzhu encouraged students to continue deepening their knowledge of the Chinese language in order to make significant contributions to Ghana-China ties.  

“China and Ghana share common interests and values and are able to carry out extensive cooperation in bilateral and international affairs. I hope you will make persistent efforts to learn the Chinese language and make contributions to the long lasting friendship between the 2 countries in the future,” Lou Danzhu remarked.
