Chair of Council, Vice-Chancellor and Five UG Faculty Members Inducted to the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences

The Chair of the University Council, Her Ladyship Justice Sophia Akuffo (Rtd.) and the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo have been inducted as Fellows of the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences (GAAS) as part of the Academy’s 2021 Founder’s week celebration.

Among the inductees were five (5) University of Ghana faculty members. They are Prof. Peter Quartey, Director, Institute of Statistical, Social and Economic Research (ISSER), Prof. Kofi Agyekum, former Dean, School of Performing Arts, Prof. Martin Odei Ajei, Department of Philosophy and Classics (all of the College of Humanities); Prof. Regina Appiah-Opong, Head, Department of Clinical Pathology, Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research, and Prof. Eric Sampane-Donkor, Department of Microbiology, School of Pharmacy (both of College of Health Sciences).

In an address, Emeritus Prof. Samuel Kofi Sefa-Dedeh, President of GAAS, congratulated the scholars on their demonstrated excellence in their respective fields of study which has merited their membership into the Academy. He explained that people are assets and if effectively harnessed, they can help to achieve the agreed organisational vision and mission. Prof. Sefa-Dedeh called for a conscious effort to nominate younger qualified candidates into the GAAS to enrich the discipline-composition of Fellows.

On behalf of the newly inducted fellows, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Amfo, expressed immense appreciation for the honour done them. She also pledged the commitment of the inducted fellows towards the contribution of the objectives of the Academy. Prof. Amfo said, “We have enough expertise at the Academy to contribute to the cultural changes within our communities”.

The ceremony was chaired by Prof. Justice Henrietta Mensah-Bonsu, immediate past President, GAAS.

The inductees were also decorated with the Academy’s brooch and presented with certificates of membership after reading the declaration and signing the Register of Fellowship.

Present at the induction ceremony were Professors Ivan Addae-Mensah and Ernest Aryeetey, past Vice-Chancellors of the University.
