Book on History of College of Health Sciences Launched

A 10-chapter book on the history of the College of Health Sciences has been launched. The book titled, “Promoting Health Through Education, Research and Service; the History of The College of Health Sciences”, is 485 pages, and highlights the beginnings and developmental trajectories of each of the constituent units of the College. 

Pro Vice-Chancellor, in charge of Research Innovation and Development Prof. Felix Ankomah Asante, who launched the book paid glowing tribute to the late Emeritus Prof. Emmanuel Quaye Archampong for his enormous contribution to the setting up of the College of Health Sciences.  

Prof. Asante said, ‘I am very sure readers of the book will get to know about the invaluable roles the late Prof. E. Q. Archampong and others played in the establishment of the College. It is one of the surest means we can continue to preserve his legacy and that of the other trailblazers.” He indicated his satisfaction with the work of the History Book Writing Committee. “Professor Tagoe and his team have painstakingly put the pieces of over 20 years of seemingly chaotic activities to form some order in this voluminous book, to help understand where we have come from to guide the future”, Prof. Asante said. He extended a hearty congratulations to the College for the achievement and bold initiative. 

Prof. Julius Fobil, Provost, College of Health Sciences

In his address, Prof. Julius Fobil, Provost, College of Health Sciences, explained that “the book, which is vital to our educational agenda, chronicles the events and contributions of the College in promoting health through excellence in education”.  He expressed profound appreciation to Rev. Prof. Patrick F. Ayeh-Kumi, members of the History Book Writing Committee, past Provosts and all officials for the various roles they have played in bringing the College to its current standing.  

The Chair of the History Book Writing Committee, Prof. C. N. B. Tagoe, in his remarks, recounted with nostalgia, the conscious efforts of the Committee to present a chronological order of the units, according to year of establishment. He mentioned that there is a chapter on the conceptualisation of the College, the development of the College Library and the challenges of the then new structures of the College administration. Prof. Tagoe expressed gratitude to all members of the Committee and those who assisted the Committee in its work.

The idea to document the history of the College was initiated by Rev. Prof. Patrick Ferdinand Ayeh-Kumi, immediate past Provost, CHS, during the 40th anniversary celebration of College of Health Sciences (CHS) in 2019. He constituted the History Book Writing Committee, chaired by Prof. Clifford Nii Boi Tagoe, former Vice-Chancellor. 

Present at the book launch were Prof. Boateng OnwonaAgyeman, Provost, College of Basic and Applied Sciences; Prof. Edwin Yawson, Dean, University of Ghana Medical School (UGMS); Prof. Emmanuel Kwasi Torpey, Acting Dean, School of Public Health; staff and faculty of the College of Health Sciences.   

Also in attendance were Emerita Professor Isabella Quakyi, former Dean, School of Public Health; Prof. Margaret Lartey, former Dean, UGMS; Prof. Yaw Tettey, former Provost, CHS; Hon. Samuel Awuku Okudzeto, stateman and senior politician; media and friends of the University.
