Brief History

The Department of Modern languages was established in 1964. It was birthed out of the Department of French Studies. The Department offers Bachelor of Arts Programmes in Arabic, Russian, Spanish, Kiswahili and Chinese, the latest addition was introduced in 2009.

The Department also runs Master of Arts/Master of Philosophy Programmes in Arabic, Spanish and Russian. 

These undergraduate and graduate programmes are designed to equip students with the requisite language proficiency  and translation skills, so that they can function in various socio-economic fields at the national/international levels and respond to market demands, as agents of qualitative change using language and translation skills to break linguistic and cultural barriers.
