Anton Wilhelm Amo Lecture & Symposium

Great Hall & ISSER Conference Facilities, 7-8 December 2021

The Anton Wilhelm Amo Lecture is organized annually by MIASA at the University of Ghana. It aims at strengthening the visibility of MIASA on campus and beyond through a high-level annual lecture series, which would be a valued element in the CVs of African scholars in the social sciences and humanities. It is named after the 18th century philosopher from present-day Ghana who taught at the universities of Halle and Jena.

On 7 December 2021 MIASA held its first Amo lecture. This first Amo lecture's focus was on Amo’s life and legacy. It was given by Rev. Prof. Obi Oguejiofor from Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Nigeria, on "The Significance of Anton Wilhelm Amo in Contemporary African Philosophy". The lecture was hosted by University of Ghana's Vice Chancellor Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, in attendance of the Special Guest of Honour His Excellency Daniel Krull, the German Ambassador to Ghana.

In order to showcase Amo and his intellectual legacy at the University of Ghana campus and beyond as an example for the history of German-Ghanaian interrelations, the lecture was accompanied by a symposium on "Anton Wilhelm Amo: Reflections on his Life and Intellectual Legacy for Contemporary Discourses", which was organized in cooperation with the Department of Philosophy and the Institute of African Studies.

Furthermore, the Amo Lecture & Symposium were embedded in a broader programme on Anton Wilhelm Amo: The unveiling of a renewed plaque, originally offered to the Department of Philosophy by the University of Halle as well as a theatre play on Amo implemented by the Department of Performance Studies and the “Theater des Ostens” with the support of the Goethe Institute Ghana.
