Marine sedimentology and petrology involves the study of sedimentary materials in the marine environment. Students will be taught in areas such as Origin and types of marine sediments; Properties of sedimentary particles; Mineral composition of marine sediments; Deposition of sediments; Lithification and diagenesis; Marine sedimentary environments (littoral, delta, estuary, shelf, submarine and deep sea); The interrelationship between organisms and sediment; Techniques in practical sedimentology; Petrology of the oceanic crust; Petrology of siliciclastic rocks; and Petrology of sandstone, mudrocks and carbonate rocks.
