Definition and importance of Limnology. The hydrologic cycle. Characteristics of rivers and lakes. Formation, zonation, classification and stratification of lakes. Major man-made and natural lakes of Africa. Biotic and abiotic factors influencing productivity in the fresh water environment. Primary and secondary production in freshwater ecosystems. Tropical freshwater-water-borne diseases. Common weeds in impoundments and their management. Ecological adaptations of freshwater organisms. Water and sustainable development - crisis in the world’s freshwater resources. Resource exploitation (Fishing, Mining, power generation, transportation). Alterations of aquatic ecosystems. Pollution. Conservation and management of aquatic ecosystems.
