The Policy and Planning Unit provide planning advice and support to senior management in the wider issues of strategic planning for the University and its constituent units, including consolidation, systemization and analysis to facilitate strategic and unit level tactical planning, policy decision making, and quality improvement in research, teaching and learning.
The focus of the Policy and Planning Unit centres on environmental scanning, predictive modelling and forecasting for planning support. The purpose is to provide on an ongoing basis “strategic intelligence”, analysis and synthesis of information in support of the University’s executive management and institutional planning and at Unit levels.
There are two important forms of planning, namely tactical and strategic. We render a service in both arenas:
Tactical planning focuses on the ‘near horizon’ (e.g. our contribution to Colleges and Unit level’s five-year planning cycles such as the College of Humanities, Health Sciences, Basic and Applied Sciences and Education which feeds into and align with the overarching University Strategic Plan).
Strategic planning focuses on the long-term planning or the ‘distant horizon’ and attempts to impact on the direction of change of the institution/environment (e.g. our contribution to the development of University of Ghana’s Strategic Plan 2014 – 2024.
Our work involves analysis conducted within the institution in order to provide information which supports planning, policy formulation and decision making. We place a high priority on the processing of information about the University and its Units into business intelligence by focusing on uniform data definitions, analyses and the interpretation of information for evidence-based decision making.
Our activities range from the monitoring of aggregated student applications and admissions to the provision of information for presentations by the executive and senior management. Institutional investigations, in support of strategic planning initiatives, play an important role and often involve participation by many academic and support service departments.
One of our core mandates is also the monitoring and evaluation of the University Strategic Plan and Unit level plans.
