STUDENT MEDICAL EXAMINATION 
All fresh Students of the University of Ghana are required to undertake medical examination. The purpose of the examination is to identify some common conditions that can affect your academic work. The information provided below will guide you through the Student Medical Examination (SME) process.


 The Medical Examination process is in three (3) stages:
 ➢ The first stage involves completing the Medical Examination questionnaire and  taking dental and chest x-ray at the University Hospital, Legon. (insert link)


➢ The 2nd stage will occur within a two (2) week period and will take place at the 

     Students’ Clinic, located at the basement of the Central Cafeteria, opposite the SRC 

     Building. This involves laboratory tests (blood and urine), eye test, BMI calculation,   

     and blood pressure check. 


➢ The 3rd and final stage, involves the physical examination and completion of the  

    SME form. During the physical examination, the doctor will listen to your heart   

    beat, breathing and your abdomen will be examined for any abnormalities. The 

    Medical Officer will review all your laboratory results and chest x-ray for any sign of 

    illness. Thereafter, the medical examination form will be completed and endorsed by 

    the Medical Officer.

 

All students should remember to sign the medical examination notebook to indicate completion of the Student Medical Examination. 

 

 

 OUT-PATIENT DEPARTMENT (OPD) PROCESS FLOW

  1. The first point of call is the Medical Records Office at the Outpatient Department.

The following services are provided at the Medical Records Office:

  • First Time Client Registration
  • Activation of Folder
  • Booking of Specialist(s) Appointment.
  • General Enquiries.
  1. Cash paying clients should proceed to the cash office for payment. Non-cash paying clients should proceed to the Nurses’ Station.
  2. Clients should proceed to the Nurses’ Station to check their vitals and be directed to the assigned Consulting Room.
  3. Clients with Laboratory, X-ray, etc. requests should present the request at the cash office first before proceeding to the Laboratory or X-ray Unit.
  4. Clients should then proceed to the Pharmacy if they have any prescription for medication. Private clients should pay for medications at the cash officer before collecting their medication at the Pharmacy.
