GEOG 462: Transportation and the Space Economy & GEOG 614: Transportation and Development Students’ Fieldtrip

On the 22nd of day of March, 2019, Dr. Ernest Agyemang led 60 graduate and undergraduate students (from the Legon and Accra City campuses) on a field trip to Tema Port, located about 30 kilometres from Accra in the Industrial City of Tema. The purpose of the trip was to obtain practical experience of the various activities carried out at this important national asset which is said to handle about 80 percent of Ghana’s exports and imports, in addition to serving as a major transit point for goods from Ghana’s land-locked neighbours.

Major highlights of the trip include the observation of vessels being towed by tug boats from the anchorage into the port to berth; the processes involved vessel and cargo handling such as mooring and stevedooring. The icing on our cake was a special tour of the newly acquired state-of-the-art Tug Boats named after Commander Keith Dadzie and T.T. Addy. On these tug boats, we were taken round the bridge, accommodation and the engineer’s room to observe the navigational systems and equipment on board.
