The United Nations Special Rapporteur on toxics and human rights, Dr. Marcos Orellana will undertake an official visit to Ghana from 30 November to 13 December 2022. His visit will focus on a wide range of issues related to toxics and human rights, and the implications of the environmentally sound management and disposal of hazardous substances and wastes for human rights. A report summarizing the visit and including recommendations will be presented to the UN Human Rights Council in September 2023.

 

The country visit will involve meetings between the Special Rapporteur and government officials, members of the legislature and judiciary, state institutions, civil society organizations, academics, and individuals and discussion on priority areas including

 

i) large and small-scale mining industry and the use of mercury. 

(ii)solid waste management and facilities, including hazardous waste and plastics management.

(iii) the use of pesticides, monocultures, and fertilizers. 

iv) the impact of electronic waste in Agbogbloshie; 

v) contamination by the textile industry.

In connection with the aforementioned visit, the School of Public Health plans to inaugurate its West Africa Center for Global Environmental and Occupational Health to afford the Special Rapporteur the opportunity to appraise independent scientific data on environmental pollution in Ghana on Thursday, 8th December, 2022
