Ms. Elisabeth Abena Osei Wins Prestigious Award

We are pleased to announce that Ms. Elisabeth Abena Osei is the recipient of the prestigious African Literature Association Graduate Student Best Essay Award for 2022. This award is for an outstanding paper in African literary studies by a graduate student.

Ms. Osei is a second year MPhil student at the department of English at the University of Ghana. She beat off competition from even more experienced graduate students from all over the world to win the prize.

This is the citation for her award:

"A persuasive and well-written paper on the ways in which a return to oral traditions in Nalo Hopkinson' arguably Afrofuturistic Midnight Robber allows for a critical space for the marginalized to engage. The paper usefully engages in the definitional debates surrounding the term 'Afrofuturism' and weighs in on how Hopkinson's text may fit in those debates."

The department of English is proud of Ms. Osei.
