SUMMARY PROFILE
Prof. Patrick Asamoah Sakyi is a Professor of Geochemistry at the Department of Earth Science, University of Ghana. He has over 14 years experience in university teaching and research. He holds B.Sc. (Geology) and M.Phil Geology (Mineral Exploration) degrees from the University of Ghana, M.Sc. degree in Environmental Engineering from the Technical University of Denmark (DTU), and Ph.D. degree in Geochemistry from Okayama University, Japan. Prior to joining the University of Ghana, he worked as a Research Assistant and later as a Researcher in the Institute for Study of the Earth’s Interior (now Institute for Planetary Materials), Okayama University, Japan.
Prof. Sakyi was appointed to the position of Lecturer in the Department of Geology (now Department of Earth Science) in 2009. He was promoted to the rank of Senior Lecturer in 2012, Associate Professor in 2018, and Professor in 2021. His research interests are evolution, petrogenesis and emplacement of igneous rocks; provenance and tectonic setting of sedimentary rocks; hydrochemistry and water quality studies, as well as the study of environmental impacts associated with mining, waste disposal and other anthropogenic activities. His current research activities are focused on the application of petrography, geochemistry, K, Sm-Nd, Rb-Sr, Lu-Hf, isotope systematics, and zircon U-Pb dating on Paleoproterozoic Birimian rocks of Ghana to investigate their petrogenesis, provenance and geotectonic setting. He also collaborates with colleague researchers from different countries.
Prof. Sakyi teaches several courses, mainly in the areas of geochemistry/geochronology and water resources at both undergraduate and graduate levels. He has supervised over 60 undergraduate (BSc) students. He has also supervised/co-supervised over 48 MSc and MPhil students’ research projects and has supervised/is supervising 8 PhD students in the University of Ghana. He holds membership of the following professional bodies; Ghana Institution of Geoscientists (GhIG), The Geochemical Society, Geological Society of America (GSA), Geological Society of Africa (GSAf) and American Geophysical Union (AGU).
