The Multiscale Flood Monitoring and Assessment Services for West Africa Project

This project is funded by the AU in coordination with the European Union under the GMES and Africa Project. It is aimed at developing a flood forecasting system and providing training and capacity building opportunities for Disaster Management Organizations and other stakeholders on optimal management strategies for flood related disasters in five West African countries (Nigeria, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Burkina Faso, and Benin). The project is coordinated by the Center for Space Science Education at the Obafemi Awolowo University in Ife, Nigeria, and scientists from the Department of Earth Science are co-Investigators. It is based largely on the processing of remote sensing data and hydrological modeling. In Ghana, the project focuses on the flood vulnerable districts within the Black Volta Basin in Northern Ghana.
