This is a graduate seminar course that analyses the relationship between communication and development, especially in countries classified as “less developed” or Third World. The seminar reviews the historical development of the concept “development”, and its principal characteristics, particularly the social, cultural and political dimensions as they affect quality of life. The seminar also analyses the relationship between the development process and communication, and the utilisation of communication strategies and structures to promote national development. Finally, the course explores the theories and mainstream approaches used to conceptualise, design and implement communication support programmes for development in Third World countries.
