The project was implemented under a collaborative agreement with the Institute for Sustainable Water, Integrated Management and Ecosystem research (SWIMMER), University of Liverpool (UK). Other partners brought into the implementation Water Resources Research Institute of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research(Ghana) and the Ghana Wildlife Society.

The aim was to develop the “Ecosystem Approach” to managing wetlands and other natural resources within Ghana and West Africa. The ecosystem approach is defined as a strategy for integrated management of land, water and living resources that promotes conservation and sustainable use in an equitable way.

The outputs from the project included the development of educational materials for planners, local authorities and other stakeholders at various levels of expertise as an aid for decision making, the development of a set of nested indicators of ecosystem health adapted for use in Ghana and within the West African Sub-region, and the production of a policy document outlining the means of applying the ecosystem approach in the management of Ghana’s riverine ecosystems.
