Brief Description of Project Objectives and Achievements

The training programme was organized by the Centre for African Wetlands in collaboration with the Avian Demography Unit of the University of Cape Town, South Africa to contribute to the development of wetland and waterbird research capacity and management expertise in the West African Sub-region. The main outputs of the course were:

i) Building of capacity and skills for wetland research and management in West Africa as a whole and Ghana in particular
ii) Providing opportunities for local scientists to be exposed to bird ringing as a research tool and enhance expertise for shorebird research in the sub-region,
iii) Establish a waterbird ringing and research project to contribute to regional and continent-wide wetland conservation initiatives;
iv) Build knowledge base and understanding of waterbird migrations (particularly in Africa) so as to develop and implement appropriate conservation actions.
