Brief Description of Project Objectives and Achievements:

The programme was organized as a collaboration initiative between the Commonwealth Secretariat, the Development Planning Unit of the University College of London, the International Water Management Institute and the Centre for African Wetlands and was hosted by CAW. The project involved development of course synopsis and training materials for and delivery of a five-day practical executive exposure programme.

The participants were Chief Executives, management level officers dealing with water and sanitation in local governments and other senior officers in relevant ministries in selected commonwealth countries including  The programme was delivered through a mix of lectures, films, discussions, local visit to some relevant water and sanitation delivery agencies in Accra and plenary sessions.

The programme introduced participants to the principles of integrated water management, private-public partnerships in the provision of water and water programmes supporting livelihoods of the poor. At the end of the programme, participants:

  1. understood better the role of local governments and other stakeholders in the delivery of water and sanitation services,
  2. acquired the skills to assess the sustainability implications of a range of service delivery options,
  3. understood the importance of building lasting partnerships with the private sector for local development; and
  4. understood the importance engaging with practical approaches to poverty reduction through improved provision of water and sanitation
