Director's Welcome

Introducing the Centre for Climate Change and Sustainability Studies (C3SS)

The Centre for Climate Change and Sustainability Studies (C3SS) at the University of Ghana, under the College of Basic and Applied Sciences, has gradually become a key research and learning hub in Ghana and across the African sub-region.

C3SS boasts of a multidisciplinary faculty dedicated to teaching and research, committed to training and capacity-building in climate change and sustainable development. Our core research areas explore climate change issues in Economics, Biodiversity, Health, Food Security, Sustainable Resource Management (including Water Resource Management), Green Economy, Environment and Renewable Energy.

At C3SS, our vision is to build human and institutional capacity through demand-driven education, training, and research to address Africa’s climate change and sustainable development issues. Determined to achieve this goal, our training approach is distinctly field-based to encourage experiential and participatory learning. Our graduates are therefore able to demonstrate a high comprehension of the issues and engage them through research in academia or within the professional space with competence and commitment.

The Centre currently runs Master of Science (MSc) and Master of Philosophy (MPhil) programmes in Climate Change and Sustainable Development. These programmes require a thesis project for completion and include courses in:
Advanced Environmental Management, Environmental Sustainability & Impact Evaluation, Communicating Climate Change, Ecosystem-Based Adaptation, Climate Change Policies & Legal Framework and Carbon Accounting & Marketing.

Both programmes are in the ninth year of inception and continue to attract students with diverse backgrounds and interests from Ghana and across Africa, yet the class sizes are small and intimate enough for healthy faculty-student interactions. There is also a doctoral programme under development (PhD in Climate Change and Sustainable Development) to allow for in-depth analysis of Earth System-Governance, One Health (Health in a Global Environment) and Urban Environmental Changes and a broad range of subjects.

Feel free to explore our website. Hope you will find all the information here very useful, and do not hesitate to contact us for any further information you may need.
