Our Legacy

The Department of Biochemistry, Cell and Molecular Biology (BCMB) at the University of Ghana has a rich legacy of producing alumni who have significantly contributed to scientific research, education, and public service both nationally and internationally.

Established in 1962, the department has been at the forefront of life sciences education and research in Ghana.

Prof. Marian Ewurama Addy

Prof. Marian Ewurama Addy (1942–2014)

The first Ghanaian woman to attain the rank of full professor in the natural sciences. A distinguished biochemist, she focused her research on the biochemistry of herbal medicine.

She also served as the first host of the National Science and Maths Quiz, inspiring countless young Ghanaians.

Prof. Gordon Awandare

Prof. Awandare earned his BSc and MPhil in Biochemistry from the University of Ghana. He is the founding director of WACCBIP and serves as Pro VC for Academic and Student Affairs.

His research focuses on the molecular and cellular biology of malaria parasites.
