The National Tertiary Education Conference (NTEC), organized by the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC), was a transformative platform designed to advance tertiary education in Ghana. This year's event, held from the 5th to 7th November, 2024, at the Cedi Conference Centre of the University of Ghana, focused on the theme; "Transforming Tertiary Education in Ghana: Dialogue, Policy, and Practice." The conference spotlighted key areas such as policy development, innovative teaching methods, and curriculum enhancements.
Delivering the opening address, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Nana Aba Appiah Amfo highlighted the importance of the conference, expressing confidence in the meaningful and productive discussions that were anticipated to shape the future of tertiary education in Ghana.
Making a presentation at the conference, Professor Daniel K. Twerefou, Director of the Academic Quality Assurance Directorate, pinpointed the rapid growth in higher education enrolment and the pressing need for effective Quality Assurance (QA) systems which, in his view were critical in maintaining programme standards and driving continuous improvement. He also addressed the challenges in managing QA, such as limited resources, bureaucratic delays, and staff shortages. To address these issues, he proposed strategies like strengthening research, offering faculty training, and leveraging management information systems.
The conference highlighted the essential role of effective governance, industry collaboration, innovative curriculum development, and quality assurance practices in advancing higher education in Ghana.
