Call for Scholarship Applications 2023: Wits – Edinburgh Sustainable African Futures (WESAF) Doctoral Programme

Starting April 21, 2023 - Ending April 21, 2024

The University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa and The University of Edinburgh in Scotland, UK in partnership with Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program are pleased to invite eligible scholarship applications to their collaborative Doctoral Programme in Sustainable African Futures (WESAF).

The WESAF Doctoral Programme aims to provide research training to equip students (primarily academics already holding tenured positions) to complete interdisciplinary doctoral research on areas related to sustainable on the African continent.

The WESAF Doctoral Programme comprises of two components:

 

1. MSc by Research in Sustainable African Futures (delivered online by University of Edinburg)

2. PhD in African Sustainable Futures (delivered jointly by University of Witwatersrand and University of Edinburg)

 

The Masters by Research and PhD programmes will combine in-person elements including sustainability schools (in person schools focused on enhancing knowledge in the field of sustainability research) in South Africa and contact sessions in Edinburgh alongside workplace-based internships. Supervision will jointly be delivered online by academics from both University of Edinburgh and Witwatersrand.
