The Program

The Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIMR), University of Ghana, Legon, Ghana, with funding support from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is implementing a project titled ‘Supporting a Drug Discovery Hub Development in Ghana'. This project seeks to train young scientists and technicians towards building a critical mass for drug discovery applications, equip them to compete effectively for international funding for research work in Africa, offer them international exposure, and facilitate their networking and collaboration with other institutions. This call is to invite interested applicants apply for specific positions in the fields of Malaria- in vitro antimalarial drug assays and Organic/Medical Chemistry. Successful applicants will conduct research for a one-year period (renewable up to two years based on satisfactory performance and availability of funds) in a strong interdisciplinary environment at the NMIMR/ Department of Chemistry (Drug Innovation Group, Frank Torto Building). Suitably qualified applicants are invited to submit applications for the four (4) positions listed below:

 

1) Malaria – in vitro antimalarial drug assays

a) Postdoctoral Fellow

This person must have expertise in performing antimalarial drug assays in addition to the items listed below

a. Malaria parasite (asexual stage and gametocyte) culture

b. Performing SYBR Green 1 drug assays, Ring stage survival assays (for artemisinin resistance) and Gametocidal assays

c. Using the flow cytometer and analyzing data obtained from the flow cytometer

d. Critical thinking and manuscript writing skills

 

b) Laboratory technician

This person must have expertise in working in BSL2 facilities in addition to the items listed below

a. Malaria parasite culture

b. Preparing and reading thick and thin blood films

c. Good record keeping and organization skills

 

Eligibility

Postdoctoral Fellow: A Young Scientist seeking research career in academia or industry. Applicant should have a Ph.D., MD/Ph.D. or equivalent degree in relevant biomedical sciences (biochemistry, biological sciences, molecular biology etc.) obtained within the past 5 years. Individuals who have submitted their Ph.D. dissertations are also eligible to apply. Applicants must be highly motivated, have strong research and conceptual skills and be interested in developing novel research directions. Applicants must have strong written and oral communication skills in English. Working knowledge of English would be an advantage.

Laboratory Technician: A Young Scientist with a background in medical laboratory technology/ laboratory technology or biochemistry (or other life sciences) with experience in cell culture. Applicants must be highly motivated, have strong laboratory skills and be interested in assisting the development of novel research directions. Applicants must have strong written and oral communication skills in English. Working knowledge of English would be an advantage.

 

2) Organic/Medical Chemistry

a) Postdoctoral Fellow

This is a Postdoctoral Fellowship in Organic/Medical Chemistry with research focus on synthetic organic chemistry and medicinal chemistry. The successful candidate will be expected to utilize data from DMPK and biological studies to design and synthesize potential drug leads for malaria and other neglected tropical diseases.

b) Research Assistant

The Research Assistant should have research expertise in Synthetic Organic Chemistry or Medicinal Chemistry. The successful candidate will be expected to utilize data from DMPK and biological studies to design and synthesize potential drug leads for malaria and other neglected tropical diseases.

Eligibility

Postdoctoral Fellow: A Young Scientist seeking research career in academia or industry. Applicant should have a Ph.D. degree in Synthetic Organic Chemistry or Medicinal Chemistry obtained within the past 5 years. Individuals who have submitted their Ph.D. dissertations are also eligible to apply. Applicants must be able to carry out independent organic synthesis and be willing to supervise MSc. and Ph.D. students. The applicant must also be highly motivated, have strong research and conceptual skills and be interested in developing novel research directions. Applicants must have strong written and oral communication skills in English. Working knowledge of English would be an advantage.

 

Research Assistant: A Young Scientist with a Master’s degree in Synthetic Organic Chemistry or Medicinal Chemistry obtained within the past 5 years. Prospective applicants must be able to carry out independent organic synthesis and must be willing to work with other researchers in the laboratory. The applicant must also be highly motivated, have strong research and conceptual skills, and be interested in developing novel research directions. Applicants must have strong written and oral communication skills in English. Working knowledge of English would be an advantage.
