Boniface Baboreka Kayang is an Associate Professor in the Department of Animal Science, University of Ghana, with over 25 years of experience in teaching and research. He obtained his PhD in Agriculture in 2002 at Gifu University, Japan, specialising in Molecular Animal Genetics, and was awarded the Presidential Certificate for Excellence. Subsequently, he had postdoc training at Gifu University (2002-2003) and at the Laboratoire de Génétique Cellulaire, INRA Toulouse, France (2003-2004). Later, he was awarded a two-year Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) Postdoc Fellowship which he undertook at Gifu University and at Kyoto University Japan (2007-2009). His research interest is in the sustainable use of local animal genetic resources, which he has been actively promoting through the successful implementation of a number of research projects with grants obtained from Promoting Sustainable Development in Agricultural Research Systems (DURAS; 2005-2007), Teaching and Learning Education Fund (TALIF; 2005-2007), Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA; 2013-2016), Ajinomoto Foundation International Nutrition (AIN) Programme (2018-2020), United States Agency for International Development (USAID; 2013-2023), Innovate UK Agri-Tech (2019-2021), and Japan Science and Technology (JST; 2020-2021). Through these projects, he has been contributing to characterising and improving local animal genetic resources, including chicken, guinea fowl and grasscutter. In 2016, he co-founded the Grasscutter Initiative for Rural Transformation (GIfT), an NGO devoted to promoting grasscutter rearing among rural smallholder farmers in the Upper West Region of Ghana to improve their livelihoods. Administratively, he is the current Head of the Department of Animal Science, University of Ghana, having previously served in that capacity from 2010 to 2013. He also serves on several Boards and Committees of the University of Ghana. He has authored/co-authored over 115 scholarly papers, 62 of which are in international refereed journals.
